Why Canadian MMA athlete, Mario Pereira, chooses Watson’s Performance Wear

We sat down with #7 ranked Canadian Mixed Martial Arts athlete, Mario Pereira, to talk about his favorite types of workout clothes for all of his various trainings.

Having started in High School Wrestling, then transitioning to Mixed Martial Arts (or MMA), Mario always had a passion for living an active lifestyle and being in tip top shape. His grueling workouts and trainings include Boxing/Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Jiu Jistu, Wrestling, Strength & Conditioning and more. Depending on the day, you can find him doing one or more of these trainings in a single session. This is why he truly understands the importance of wearing the right performance clothing in order to not only feel good and comfortable but also to enhance his workouts.


What do you look for when choosing your Performance wear?

I’ve always had a hard time finding the right workout clothes for various reasons. One of the biggest challenges is finding clothing that is not only comfortable and lightweight but also antimicrobial and odor-free. Sometimes, I can be in the gym for 2 or 3 hours at a time and the worst thing is to have your workout clothes drenched in sweat with a bad odour emitting from them. It’s embarrassing and just makes me want to stop my training mid-way. Throughout the years, I made sure to try all sorts of brands and styles to find exactly what I need. I look for:

-       A stretchy, lightweight material

-       Comfort, where the sizing fits just right

-       Anti-microbial treatment

-       Clothing that dries quickly; that wicks moisture away to keep me dry


What types of clothing do you like to wear?

Because of my workouts, I like to wear tight fitting tops and leggings. Those are especially useful for my wrestling and jiu jitsu trainings. That’s when I like to wear my Watson’s Performance Long John and Long Sleeve Top. If I know I’ll be outdoors, I tend to wear my Performance Zip Mockneck and Contrast Long John. Those are all of my go-to’s! In the winter here in Canada, I’ll choose to wear my Double Layer Crew Neck or Merino Long Sleeve top and layer to ensure I get a proper training. In my line of work, it’s also super important to wear my Watson’s when it’s time to weight cut for a fight, as I will layer up as much as possible and get a good sweat going.


Why would you recommend others, who may not be an athlete like yourself, to choose Watson’s wear for their workouts or outdoors activities?

Because I am quite picky with workout clothes that I choose to wear, I’ve tried tons of different brands and styles. I am also constantly doing research on the best clothing to wear during workouts. Many brands out there claim to be “performance” wear but don’t keep you dry or don’t have any sort of antimicrobial treatment. Watson’s invests in ensuring that their clothing is perfect for outdoor baselayer wear as well as performance wear. They are great for those skiiers that need to layer in the cold weather as well as for those gym-rats who are looking for comfortable, flexible performance wear. I can’t wait to see what else Waton’s will come up with next!
